Trenton, Mich.—April 14, 2013—After taking the lead on the first day of competition with a record-breaking 49-pound, 10-ounce basket, Iowans Marty Stuefen and Carl Holten hung on to win the Cabela’s Masters Walleye Circuit’s Detroit River and western Lake Erie tournament at Trenton, Michigan.

“It’s an awesome feeling,” said Holten, of Harpers Ferry. “We were in first place on Day One and managed to bring it home.” The team’s monstrous first-day catch made MWC history, eclipsing the Circuit’s all-time single-day basket record of 48.95 pounds, set by Jason Kopf, of Avon Lake, Ohio, and Mike Miller, of Brunswick, Ohio. Spring Valley, Ill.—March 24, 2013—Iowans Clayton Freiburger and Mike Bisdorf rallied from third place on Day One to finish atop the 131 teams battling for their share of more than $70,000 in cash and prizes March 23-24 as the Cabela’s Masters Walleye Circuit kicked off its 29^th season on the Illinois River at Spring Valley, Illinois.

“It’s surreal, it hasn’t sunk in yet,” beamed Bisdorf, of Dubuque, moments after he and Freiburger scored their first MWC victory. “This is our fourth season fishing the Circuit together—and our first win feels incredible!” Continue reading

To put it mildly day at at the season opener of the Cabela’s MWC did not go well for most of the 130 teams entered.   The final Day 1 standings show that only 70 teams manged to weigh in even a single fish and there were but two limits of sauger brought to the scales.

In the end it was Derek Boeger and Ron Demus from Illinois who had four fish that weighed in at exactly eight pounds that took the lead for Day 1.
